A Lament for Love

Silent tears behind the gossamer shroud
Of grief when death steals love away
Bent the fair head once young and proud
Now wearied by the burden of night without day

Who has seen her true love sleeping
Vested with glory in mound of stone?
Who has heard the elf maid weeping
She who must now walk alone?

Who has heard the West Wind crying
By emerald sea and sundering shore
Who has heard the sad, sweet sighing
Of those who were, but are no more?

Long is the way that fate her shall bear
Until all has changed, and her long life passed
Elusive phantom, wrought with sorrow yet so fair
The lost, the lonely, and the last

Who has gazed upon her face
So fair, yet etched with mortal pain?
And who has beheld she of fallen grace
She of long-forgotten name?
